Find out all about our Community & Influencer Lead!
April 21, 2020
We’ve introduced you to different members of our various teams here at Viker. Now, it’s time to introduce you to our Marketing team... meet Ellie, our Community & Influencer Lead!
Would you say you’re an avid gamer?
I wouldn’t say so. Sometimes I compete on Mario Kart Wii with my housemates for a bit of fun, or play casual mobile games on my commute to and from work. I'm living proof that you don't have to be a gamer to work in this industry!
How did you get into marketing?
I’ve always known I wanted to work in a creative role, but I equally loved writing and research, so ideally I wanted something that incorporated it all. While I was studying my Philosophy degree I did a few unpaid marketing internships, to get some experience and to see if a marketing career was for me.
At the end of my final internship, in marketing research, they hired me as a Research Analyst! The role was largely focussed on consumer insights, behaviours and motivations; for example, what makes a customer pick up a certain product. I found it so interesting - I knew from then on that I wanted to pursue a career in marketing.
What does a typical day look like for you?
My role, essentially, is to develop and implement successful marketing strategies: managing Viker’s marketing activities and our social communities. This means that my days vary so much, depending on what features, product launches or events we have in the pipeline. Right now, for example, my focus is to spread awareness of our new Lotto Day NHS draw through many different platforms and communities!
What is your favourite thing about working for Viker?
The fact that I’m always doing something different! Viker is a very forward-thinking company; there’s always a new product or event coming up to work on. I love the company culture as well - everybody’s ideas are welcomed and encouraged!
What is your biggest challenge, working in marketing?
A large part of my role is social media based; tapping into trends, events and occurrences is so important for our strategy. The challenge is that they can be so unpredictable - we’ve all seen how a post can go viral within a matter of hours, or a trend can crop up overnight. It means I have to make sure that we’ve got content or influencers ready quickly, while it’s still a hot topic! Also, Ben’s jokes are pretty awful…
How do you tend to spend your free time?
I love being creative - whether that’s digitally drawing on my iPad, or going classic with a pencil and paintbrush.
Can you tell us an interesting fact about you?
I donate my hair to charities that make wigs for those that have lost their hair through chemotherapy or autoimmune diseases. I grow it out and then every 2-3 years, when it’s long enough, I get 10-15 inches cut off for charity, before repeating the same process again!
