An insight into our Product Manager’s daily life, and his biggest challenges working at Viker…
April 6, 2020
You’ve read all about one of our Unity Developer’s, Martin, and our Game Designer, Oliver. Now, it’s time to introduce you to our Product Manager, Rob!
Has gaming always been a hobby for you?
Definitely! I’ve played games since about four or five years old so I’d call myself a gamer, for sure. I think I’ve owned pretty much every games console from a PlayStation One onwards… there’s too many to list!
So, how did you start your career in the gaming industry?
Funnily enough, I hadn’t always geared towards a career in gaming. I think it can be difficult to decide on a career path, and to know where your skills might be useful. I actually studied Chemistry at university and went on to do a Masters in it; it’s just something I’ve always been good at.
Once I’d finished university I applied for different roles in the tech industry; mainly product and marketing. I then got picked up by Product Madness, and my games career took off from there. I do think that the analytical and problem solving skills I gained from studying Chemistry have put me in a really good position in the games industry though - they’ve definitely come in handy in my career so far.
What does a typical day look like for you at Viker?
To put it simply, I have product ownership, so there is a mix of things that I do day-to-day to fulfil this role. It ranges from organising teams and their work flow, maintaining a good level of communication between teams, putting roadmaps in place for our developers, a lot of quality assurance testing to make sure that the games are working as they should be, and a bit of designing as well.
What would you say is the biggest challenge of your role, and why?
For me personally, I would say it’s making decisions for numerous apps, all at the same time. Viker is continually growing and releasing new products, so it’s just a case of keeping on top of it all. Having said that, one of my favourite things about working at Viker is the products, so making those decisions is rewarding in the long run!
What’s your favourite game ever, and why?
That’s a tough one! I’d have to say Kingdom Hearts. It’s an action role-playing game, in a Disney world. It has the best storyline of any game I’ve played, so I think that’s why I love it so much!
Finally, do you have a fun fact about yourself that you can share?
I played Poker at a decent level, and I even won a few tournaments in London.
So, that wraps it up - we hope you enjoyed reading all about Rob! Remember to keep checking our jobs page if Viker sounds like the sort of place you’d want to work!
