Our New Norm: Working from Home

How we’ve adjusted to working remotely during the global pandemic

April 29, 2020

Like many other businesses, the current lockdown has resulted in the Viker team working from home; the place everyone associates with relaxing after a day in the office.

Here at Viker, we’re a very sociable bunch that like to communicate face-to-face, coming together to think of ideas. Going from our lively office atmosphere to working individually at home was a big jump which had to be made very quickly! While, of course, we’ve all found ourselves wishing we were back in the office from time to time… we’ve made it work, and well.

Felix, Developer: “There’s definitely some paw-sitives… I get to spend more time with my dog, Shakespeare!”

We’ve even managed to design, develop and release a whole new Easter event in Scratch Day and Spin Day as well as a free NHS fundraising draw in Lotto Day! Despite being at home, the team have really worked together to get these things completed. We’ve tried to stick to a schedule as similar as possible to being in the office, for example:

  • Work calls: On a Monday morning at 9.30am we have a video call with the whole team, to talk through how the last week has gone, and plans for the following week. Every other morning, the different teams within Viker have their own call to talk through anything else in more detail! We also have one scheduled every Wednesday afternoon for anyone to present their work to the rest of the Viker team, if they wish to!

Tahlia, Video Editor: “The video calls every morning have allowed me to maintain most of my morning routine. They make me a lot more focussed at the start of the day! Seeing what everyone else is up to is a great motivator too.”

Ellie, Community & Influencer Lead: “In our team, often our best ideas come from collaborative brainstorms - which is much harder to replicate over message or email. So we jump on calls with each other everyday, to keep creativity flowing!”

  • Normal working hours: Another very important thing for us, is to make sure we all work our normal hours; starting at 9.30am, finishing at 6pm, and taking a lunch break! We even share photos and compete over who has the best lunch...

Dan, Co-Founder: “Lunchtime BBQ’s have been a must-have for me while it’s been sunny. It’s something I wouldn’t usually be able to do on a working day, so I’m taking advantage of it!”

  • Friday pub quizzes: In the office, on a Friday, we finish work slightly earlier than usual and most of the team stay for some games and drinks. To replicate this at home, we carry out a Viker pub quiz on a video call, hosted by somebody new each week! We even have a dress code: you must wear a hat.

These are just a few of the ways we’ve made home-life feel like office-life. Are you working from home at the moment? How have you adjusted? Drop us a message to let us know!
